PROVIDENCE CHURCH

May 30, 2021

Welcome

Passing of the Peace: Though we are separated by distance our hearts are one in Christ. The peace of Christ be with you!  And also with you!

Call to worship:   Psalm 90 (select verses)

Leader: Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.

People:  Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world,

Leader:  Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

People:  Return, O Lord! How long?

Leader:  Have compassion on Your servants. Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy,

That we may rejoice and be glad all our days!

People:  Make us glad according to the days in which You have afflicted us,

The years in which we have seen evil.

Leader:  Let Your work appear to Your servants, And Your glory to their children.

People:  And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, And establish the work of our hands for us;

ALL:  Yes, establish the work of our hands.

Songs of Praise:

When Morning Gilds the Skies (German, ca. 1800; tune Joseph Barnby, 1865)

When morning gilds the skies, my heart awaking cries:

May Jesus Christ be praised.

Alike at work and prayer, to Jesus I repair:

May Jesus Christ be praised.

Does sadness fill my mind? A solace here I find:

May Jesus Christ be praised.

Or fades my earthly bliss? My comfort still is this:

May Jesus Christ be praised.

In heav’n’s eternal bliss the loveliest strain is this:

May Jesus Christ be praised.

The pow’rs of darkness fear, when this sweet chant they hear:

May Jesus Christ be praised.

Be this, while life is mine, my canticle divine:

May Jesus Christ be praised.

Be this th’eternal song, through all the ages on:

May Jesus Christ be praised.

For the Beauty of the Earth (Folliott Pierpoint, 1864; tune C. Kocher, 1838)

For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies,

For the love which from our birth over and around us lies,

Lord of all, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise.

For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night,

Hill and vale, and tree and flower, sun and moon and stars of light,

Lord of all, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise.

For each perfect figt of thine to our race so freely given,

Graces human and divine, flowers of earth and buds of heaven,

Lord of all, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise.

For thy Son, who from on high humbly came to earth to die,

For redemption from our sin for all who believe in him,

Lord of all, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise.

Amen (Charity Gayle, Joshua Sherman, Steven Musso CCLI #7081391)

Behold, Jehovah, seated on the throne,

Abba, Father, the wealth that overflows,

The God who was and is and shall be forevermore: Holy is the Lord

Chorus:

Amen, Amen! Blessing and honor and glory and power, Amen!

Amen, Amen! Blessing and honor and glory and power, Amen.

Behold, the Way, the Truth and the Life,

Perfect Savior, the blood that washed us white,

The God who was and is and shall be forevermore: Holy is the Lord (Chorus)

Bridge:

Holiness has a name, and it’s Jesus.

Victory has a name, and it’s Jesus.

The Word has a name, and it’s Jesus.

Redemption has a name, and it’s Jesus (Repeat)

Chorus:

Amen, Amen! Blessing and honor and glory and power, Amen!

Amen, Amen! Blessing and honor and glory and power, Amen!

Amen, Amen! Amen, Amen.

Confession/Assurance

Respond in Praise:

Jesus Paid It All (Elvina Hall, 1865; Alex Nifong; tune John Thomas Grape CCLI #4689508)

I hear the Savior say, “Your strength indeed is small.

Child of weakness, watch and pray; find in Me your all in all.”

Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe;

Sin had left a crimson stain—he washed it white as snow.

Lord now indeed I find your power and yours alone

Can change the leper’s spots, and melt the heart of stone. (Chorus)

Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe;

Sin had left a crimson stain—he washed it white as snow.

For nothing good have I whereby your grace to claim—

I’ll wash my garments white in the blood of Calvary’s Lamb.

Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe;

Sin had left a crimson stain—he washed it white as snow.

Oh praise the One who paid my debt, and raised this life up from the dead!(4X)

And when, before the Throne, I stand in him complete,

“Jesus died, my soul to save!” my lips shall still repeat.

Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe;

Sin had left a crimson stain—he washed it white as snow, he washed it white as snow,

He washed it white as snow!

Oh praise the One who paid my debt, and raised this life up from the dead! (4X)

Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe;

Sin had left a crimson stain—he washed it white as snow.

Scripture Reading:    Matthew 8: 1-17

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. 2 And behold, a leper[a] came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” 3 And Jesus[b] stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. 4 And Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”

The Faith of a Centurion

5 When he had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, 6 “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.” 7 And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.” 8 But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant,[c] ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel[d] have I found such faith. 11 I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, 12 while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment.

Jesus Heals Many

14 And when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. 15 He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. 16 That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.”

This is the Word of the Lord.   Thanks be to God!

Sermon:  “Christ Our Healer”

Hymn of Dedication

Here I Am, Lord (Daniel Schutte, 1981)

1.I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry.

All who dwell in deepest sin my hand will save.

I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright.

Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send?

Chorus: Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.

I will go, Lord, if you lead me.

I will hold your people in my heart.

2.I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain.

I have wept for love of them; they turn away.

I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone,

I will speak my word to them…Whom shall I send? (Chorus)

3.I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame.

I will set a feast for them, my hand will save.

Finest bread I will provide, till their hearts be satisfied.

I will give my life to them…whom shall I send? (Chorus)

Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil:

for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory.  Amen

Hymn of Thanksgiving:

Jesus, What a Friend for Sinners (Charles Wesley, 1744; tune Rowland Pritchard, 1855)

Jesus, what a friend for sinners! Jesus! Lover of my soul;

Friends may fail me, foes assail me, He, my Savior, makes me whole.

Chorus:

Hallelujah! What a Savior! Hallelujah, what a friend!

Saving, helping, keeping, loving, He is with me to the end.

Jesus! What a strength in weakness! Let me hide myself in him;

Tempted, tried, and sometimes failing, he, my strength, my vict’ry wins.

(Chorus)

Jesus! What a help in sorrow! While the billows o’er me roll,

Even when my heart is breaking, he, my comfort, helps my soul. (Chorus)

Jesus! What a guide and keeper! While the tempest still is high,

Storms about me, night o’ertakes me, he, my pilot hears my cry. (Chorus)

Jesus! I do now receive him, more than all in him I find;

He hath granted me forgiveness, I am his, and he is mine. (Chorus)

Benediction
