PROVIDENCE CHURCH

Welcome

Passing of the Peace: Though we are separated by distance our hearts are one in Christ. The peace of Christ be with you!  And also with you!

Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise him all creatures here below;

Praise him above, ye heavenly hosts;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Call to Worship:   Isaiah 55:6-9

Leader:  Seek the Lord while he may be found;

call upon him while he is near;

People:   Let the wicked forsake his way,

and the unrighteous man his thoughts;

Leader:   let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

People:   For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.

ALL:    For as the heavens are higher than the earth,

so are my ways higher than your ways

and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Songs of Praise:

Come, Thou Almighty King (Anon., ca 1757; tune Felice de Giardini, 1769)

Come, thou Almighty King, help us thy name to sing,

help us to praise.

Father, all glorious, o’er all victorious,

come and reign over us, Ancient of Days.

Come, thou Incarnate Word, gird on thy mighty sword,

our prayer attend.

Come, and thy people bless, and give thy Word success;

Spirit of holiness, on us descend.

Come, Holy Comforter, thy sacred witness bear

in this glad hour.

Thou who almighty art, now rule in every heart,

and ne’er from us depart, Spirit of power.

To the great One in Three eternal praises be,

hence evermore.

His sovereign majesty may we in glory see,

and to eternity love and adore.

I Will Call Upon the Lord (Michael O’Shields, 1981)

I will call upon the Lord (Echo: I will call upon the Lord)

who is worthy to be praised,    (Echo: Who is worthy to be praised)

So shall I be saved from my enemies            (Echo: So shall I be saved from my enemies)

(All:) I will call upon the Lord

The Lord liveth, and blessed be the Rock,

And may the God of my salvation be exalted!

The Lord liveth, and blessed be the Rock,

And may the God of my salvation be exalted!

One Pure and Holy Passion (Mark Altrogge, 1988 CCLI Song #270224)

Give me one pure and holy passion,

And give me one magnificent obsession;

Give me one glorious ambition for my life:

To know and follow hard after you.

(Repeat)

Chorus:

To know and follow hard after you, to grow as your disciple in the truth.

This world is empty, pale and poor, compared to knowing you my Lord;

Lead me on and I will run after you,

Lead me on and I will run after you.

Give me one pure and holy passion,

And give me one magnificent obsession;

Give me one glorious ambition for my life:

To know and follow hard after you.

Chorus:

To know and follow hard after you, to grow as your disciple in your truth.

This world is empty, pale and poor, compared to knowing you my Lord;

Lead me on and I will run after you,

Lead me on and I will run after you (Repeat Chorus)

Tag: Lead me on and I will run after you.

Confession/Assurance

Respond in Praise:

There is A Fountain (William Cowper, 1771; tune Lowell Mason, 1838)

There is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from Immanuel’s veins;

And sinners, plunged beneath that flood, lose all their guilty stains:

Lose all their guilty stains, lose all their guilty stains,

And sinners, plunged beneath that flood, lose all their guilty stains.

The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day;

And there have I, as vile as he, washed all my sins away:

Washed all my sins away, washed all my sins away;

And there have I, as vile as he, washed all my sins away.

Dear dying Lamb, your precious blood shall never lose its pow’r,

Till all the ransomed church of God be saved to sin no more:

Be saved to sin no more, be saved to sin no more,

Till all the ransomed church of God be saved to sin no more.

Ever since by faith I saw the stream your flowing wounds supply,

Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die:

And shall be till I die, and shall be till I die,

Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.

Scripture Reading:    Matthew 11:25-30

Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest

25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.[a] 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

This is the Word of the Lord.   Thanks be to God!

Sermon:  “Come Unto Me”

Hymn of Dedication

He Will Hold Me Fast (Ada Ruth Habershon, Matt Merker, 2019 CCLI #7016161)

1.When I feel my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast.

When the tempter would prevail, He will hold me fast

I could never keep my hold through life’s fearful path

For my love is often cold; he must hold me fast

Chorus:

He will hold me fast, he will hold me fast,

For my Savior loves me so; he will hold me fast.

2.Those he saves are his delight, Christ will hold me fast;

Precious in his holy sight, he will hold me fast.

He’ll not let my soul be lost, his promises shall last,

Bought by him at such a cost, he will hold me fast. (Chorus)

3.For my life he bled and died; Christ will hold me fast.

Justice has been satisfied, he will hold me fast.

Raised with him to endless life, he will hold me fast,

Till our faith is turned to sight, when he comes at last. (Chorus 2X)

Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil:

for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory.  Amen

Hymn of Thanksgiving

My Hope is Built on Nothing Less (Edward Mote, 1834; tune William Bradbury, 1863)

1.My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;

I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

Chorus: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand.

2.When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace;

in every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil. (Chorus)

3.His oath, his covenant, his blood support me in the whelming flood;

when all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay. (Chorus)

4.When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found:

dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne. (Chorus)

Benediction
