PROVIDENCE CHURCH April 4, 2021 Welcome Passing of the Peace: Though we are separated by distance our hearts are one in Christ. The peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! Call to worship: Col 1:9-17 Leader: For this reason, ever since the day we heard about your faith, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: People: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. Leader: For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. People: The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. Leader: He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. People: For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. Leader: Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. People: But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— ALL: So, continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not be moved from the resurrection hope of the gospel. Songs of Praise: Christ the Lord is Risen Today (Charles Wesley, 1739; tune Lyra Davidica, 1708) Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia! Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia! Raise your joys and triumphs high; Alleluia! Sing ye heavens and earth, reply: Alleluia! Vain the stone, the watch, the seal; Alleluia! Christ has burst the gates of hell: Alleluia! Death in vain forbids his rise; Alleluia! Christ has opened paradise. Alleluia! Lives again our glorious King; Alleluia! Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia! Once he died, our souls to save; Alleluia! Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia! Soar we now where Christ has led, Alleluia! Following our exalted Head: Alleluia! Made like him, like him we rise, Alleluia! Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia! Up from the Grave He Arose(Robert Lowry, 1874) Low in the grave He lay—Jesus my Savior, waiting the coming day—Jesus my Lord. Up from the grave He arose, with a mighty triumph o’er his foes. He arose a victor from the dark domain, and He lives forever with his saints to reign. He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose! Vainly they watch his bed—Jesus, my Savior; vainly they seal the dead—Jesus, my Lord. Up from the grave He arose, with a mighty triumph o’er his foes. He arose a victor from the dark domain, and He lives forever with his saints to reign. He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose! Death cannot keep his prey—Jesus, my Savior; he tore the bars away—Jesus, my Lord. Up from the grave He arose, with a mighty triumph o’er his foes. He arose a victor from the dark domain, and He lives forever with his saints to reign. He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose! Because He Lives (Bill & Gloria Gaither CCLI #16880) God sent his Son—they called him Jesus; He came to love, heal and forgive. He lived and died to buy my pardon; An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives. Chorus: Because He lives, I can face tomorrow; Because He lives, all fear is gone. Because I know—He holds the future, And life is worth the living, just because He lives. How sweet to hold a newborn baby, And feel the pride and joy he gives; But greater still the calm assurance: This child can face uncertain days, because He lives. (Chorus) And then one day, I’ll cross the river; I’ll fight life’s final war with pain. And then, as death gives way to vict’ry, I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know He lives (Chorus) He is Lord (Claire Cloninger, Linda Johnson, Tom Fettke, 1986 CCLI #1515225) He is Lord, He is Lord! He is risen from the dead, and He is Lord. Every knee shall bow, every tongue confess That Jesus Christ is Lord. (Repeat) Confession/Assurance Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of the Risen Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Respond in Praise: In Christ Alone (Keith Getty & Stuart Townend, 2002 CCLI #3350395) In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song. This cornerstone, this solid ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My Comforter, my All in All, here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone, who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones He came to save. Till on that cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied. For every sin on Him was laid; here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain. Then bursting forth in glorious day, up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory, sin’s curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His, and He is mine, bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death; this is the power of Christ in me. From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, can ever pluck me from His hand, Till He returns or calls me home; here in the power of Christ I’ll stand. Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand. Apostle’s Creed: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Scripture Reading: John 20 The Resurrection20 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus'[a] head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes. Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic,[b] “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her. Jesus Appears to the Disciples19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews,[c] Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.” Jesus and Thomas24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin,[d] was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” 26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” The Purpose of This Book30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Sermon: “He is Risen” Musical Offering Forever
Lord’s Supper Lord’s Prayer: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory. Amen Hymn of Thanksgiving: Crown Him with Many Crowns (Matthew Bridges, 1851; tune George Elvey, 1868) 1.Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne; hark! How the heav’nly anthem drowns all music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing of Him who died for thee, and hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity. 2.Crown Him the Lord of life, who triumphed o’er the grave, and rose victorious in the strife for those He came to save. His glories now we sing, who died and rose on high, who died, eternal life to bring, and lives that Death may die. 3.Crown Him the Lord of peace, whose pow’r a scepter sways from pole to pole that wars may cease and all be prayer and praise. His reign shall know no end, and ‘round his pierced feet fair flowers of paradise extend, their fragrance ever sweet. 4.Crown Him the Lord of love: behold his hands and side, those wounds yet visible above, in beauty glorified. All hail, Redeemer, hail! For Thou hast died for me! Thy praise and glory shall not fail throughout eternity. Benediction KNOW Welcome to Providence Church!
