Welcome

Passing of the Peace: Though we are separated by distance our hearts are one in Christ. The peace of Christ be with you!  And also with you!

Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow,

Praise him all creatures here below,

Praise him above, ye heavenly host;

Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

Amen

Call to Worship:   Psalm 149:1-5

Leader:  Praise the Lord!  Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the godly!

Congregation:  Let Israel be glad in his Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King!

Leader:  Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre!

Congregation:  For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation.

ALL:  Let the godly exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their beds.

Songs of Praise:

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing (Robert Robinson, 1758; tune Asahel Nettleton, 1825)

Come, thou fount of ev’ry blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace;

Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.

Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above;

Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, mount of God’s unchanging love.

Here I raise my Ebenezer, hither by thy help I’m come;

And I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home.

Jesus sought me when a stranger, wand’ring from the fold of God:

He, to rescue me from danger, bought me with his precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be;

Let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wand’ring heart to thee.

Prone to wander—Lord, I feel it—prone to leave the God I love:

Here’s my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.

Here’s my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.

Great Are You, Lord (Steve & Vikki Cook, CCLI #26863)

Holy Lord, most holy Lord, you alone are worthy of my praise,

O holy Lord, most holy Lord, with all of my heart I sing:

Chorus:

Great are you, Lord, worthy of praise!

Holy and true, great are you, Lord, most holy Lord.

Holy Lord, most holy Lord, you alone are worthy of my praise,

O holy Lord, most holy Lord, with all of my heart I sing:

Chorus:

Great are you, Lord, worthy of praise!

Holy and true, great are you, Lord, most holy Lord. (2X)

Holy Spirit (Bryan and Katie Torwalt, 2011)

There’s nothing worth more

That could ever come close

No thing can compare,

You’re our living hope—Your presence, Lord

I’ve tasted and seen

Of the sweetest of loves

Where my heart becomes free

And my shame is undone—Your presence, Lord

Holy Spirit, you are welcome here

Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere

Your glory, God, is what our hearts long for—

To be overcome by your presence, Lord,  *(2nd time to next section)

Your presence, Lord

(Repeat all)

*Holy Spirit, you are welcome here

Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere

Your glory, God, is what our hearts long for—

To be overcome by your presence, Lord

Your presence, Lord…your presence…

Your presence, Lord—

Let us become more aware of your presence

Let us experience the glory of your goodness (4X)

Holy Spirit, you are welcome here

Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere

Your glory, God, is what our hearts long for—

To be overcome by your presence, Lord

Confession/Assurance

Respond in Praise:

Jesus, Cast a Look on Me (John Berridge, ca. 1760)

Jesus, cast a look on me; give me sweet simplicity.

Make me poor and keep me low, seeking only Thee to know.

All that feeds my busy pride, cast it evermore aside.

Bid my will to thine submit, lay me humbly at thy feet.

Make me like a little child; of my strength and wisdom spoil,

seeing only in thy light, walking only in thy might.

Leaning on thy loving breast, where a weary soul can rest,

feeling well the peace of God flowing from his precious blood.

In this posture let me live, and hosannas daily give;

in this temper let me die, and hosannas ever cry…

in this temper, let me die, and hosannas every cry.

Scripture Reading:   Matthew 5:17-20

Christ Came to Fulfill the Law

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.   Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.  For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

This is the Word of the Lord.   Thanks be to God!

Sermon:  “Against the Law”

Hymn of Dedication

Christ, Our Hope in Life and Death(Keith Getty, Matt Boswell, Jordan Kauflin, Marr Merker & Matt Papa)

What is our hope in life and death?
Christ alone, Christ alone
What is our only confidence?
That our souls to him belong
Who holds our days within his hand?
What comes, apart from his command?
And what will keep us to the end?
The love of Christ, in which we stand

Chorus: O sing hallelujah!
Our hope springs eternal
O sing hallelujah!
Now and ever we confess
Christ our hope in life and death

What truth can calm the troubled soul?
God is good, God is good
Where is his grace and goodness known?
In our great Redeemer’s blood
Who holds our faith when fears arise?
Who stands above the stormy trial?
Who sends the waves that bring us nigh
Unto the shore, the rock of Christ? (Chorus)

Unto the grave, what will we sing?
“Christ, he lives; Christ, he lives!”
And what reward will heaven bring?
Everlasting life with him
And we will rise to meet the Lord
Then sin and death will be destroyed
And we will feast in endless joy

When Christ is ours forevermore (Chorus 2X)

Now and ever we confess
Christ our hope in life and death

Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil:

for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory.  Amen

Hymn of Thanksgiving

Amazing Grace (John Newton, 1779; tune traditional American melody)

Amazing grace!—how sweet the sound—that saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see.

Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved;

how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come;

‘tis grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun,

We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we’ve first begun.

Benediction
